It's time we held Utah accountable for the hate and bigotry it gladly exports to the rest of our union.
Enough is enough. The Mormon Church, and its associated businesses, is free to foment discrimination against gay Americans, but we are also free to stop frequenting the businesses of those who would make gays and lesbians second-class citizens.
Since its founding, America’s film industry has been inexorably intertwined with hard-working gay people who support each and every facet of the business. It's time to stop funding bigots in Utah who would use one hand to take our money, then buy knives and stab us in the back with the other. Let’s start with the annual Sundance Film Festival. It is now time for Sundance to find a better state to party in than the seat of the Mormon Church. The LAST place Sundance should be held is in Utah.
Money spent in Utah is going into the pockets of people who then use that money to take away the civil rights of gays and lesbians. We are quite literally funneling money to anti-gay bigots.
PLEASE - If you are gay or lesbian, or if you support your gay and lesbian friends, family members, co-workers and neighbors, or just the idea of basic civil rights for everyone - INSIST and DEMAND that the 2009 Sundance Film Festival be moved OUT of Utah to a state where a huge number of their citizens did not bankroll tens-of-millions of dollars in a hateful and bigoted effort to strip California citizens of their civil rights and attempt to revoke the marriages of 18,000 California newlyweds.
AN IMPORTANT WORD ABOUT E-MAILS, PHONE CALLS, LETTERS AND FAXES:
Most of these people are our friends, supporters, and members of our community; but regardless if they are or not - if you are abusive, rude, profane, loud or threatening, you are working against us. Please speak with people the way you would like to be spoken to, with respect and dignity, even if you disagree with them. Be strong and firm…but respectful!
(We’re missing most e-mail addresses. Please let us know if you have any)
Since we have mailing addresses for EVERYONE on our list, there’s nothing wrong with writing an old-fashion letter. Yes, it will cost you 42¢. It’s also simple, effective, gets read, and it gets people’s attention!
Contact Robert Redford. Tell him after years and years of Utah exporting bigotry and hate, it is now time to move the Sundance Film Festival to a different state:

State film commissions are organizations that exist in all 50 states with the goal of encouraging and facilitating film production and persuading filmmakers to bring their shoots to their respective state.
Tell the director of the Utah Film Commission that after three decades of his state benefiting from the hard work of gays and lesbians in the film industry, (the Sundance Film Festival was created in 1978 as the Utah/U.S. Film Festival in an effort to attract more filmmakers to Utah), he now needs to issue a simple press release, in which he:
- 1) Clearly states that: “The Utah Film Commission publicly condemns the passage of California’s Proposition 8.”
- 2) Clearly states that: “The Utah Film Commission fully supports same-sex marriage.”
